State program to fund high-tech work at Purdue

INSIDE PURDUE - The first awards from the new Indiana 21st Century Research and Technology Fund will support projects in the high-tech field around the state.

Gov. Frank O'Bannon announced an initial group of 13 projects that will receive more than $15 million in state-supported funding. Purdue will lead or share in nine of the 13 projects. The awards are made to groups that team Indiana universities and companies. Grants went to those projects that showed the most promise of being developed into useable products.

Grants made to Purdue and its partners:

  • Ball State, Purdue and Performance Dynamics Inc.: $749,945 for a project to develop therapeutic-use augmented soft-tissue mobilization.

  • Purdue, Notre Dame, Indiana University School of Medicine, Clarian Health Network, Indiana Centers of Medical Education, Med Institute, Indiana Health Industry Forum and Micro Data Base Systems Inc.: $1.7 million to establish the Indiana Telemedicine Incubator.

  • Purdue and Rolls-Royce Alison: $1.7 million to design low-emission engines for regional aircraft.

  • Purdue, IU, Cook Biotech, Clarian Health Partners, Med Institute and Cook Inc.: $1.9 million to establish a consortium for tissue engineering of living replacement vessels and organs.

  • Notre Dame, IU, Purdue and Zimmer Inc.: $1.9 million to develop minimally invasive orthopedic implants.

  • Purdue: $513,000 to develop artificially structured semiconductors for advanced optics and electronics.

  • Purdue: $386,000 to develop simulated moving bed absorption technologies for purification of multicomponent biochemical mixtures.

  • IU School of Dentistry, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Purdue, Inspektor Research Systems Inc., Panoramic Corp., Therametric Technologies Include, Midwest Orthodontic Manufacturing Inc. and Proctor & Gamble: $1.6 million for advanced imaging technology for disease detection and control.

  • IU, Purdue, Notre Dame, EniUrga Inc., Hemocleanse Include, Bioanalytical Systems Inc., Mudawar Thermal Systems Include, In Situ Research and Instruments: $1.1 million to establish an industry-university consortium of mid-infrared sensing, diagnostics and control clusters.
