Purdue Lambing School offers hands-on experience

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The annual Purdue Lambing School will take place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 10 at the university's Animal Sciences Research and Education Center's sheep unit, located about 10 miles northwest of campus.

"The Lambing School gives producers, both new and experienced, information at a very critical stage of production," said Mike Neary, Extension sheep specialist. "While there are scheduled activities, the program is designed to be informal and offer maximum hands-on experience."

Topics will include management, nutrition, ewe obstetrics, reproduction and lamb processing. Participants will get the opportunity to process lambs and assist with birthing during the program.

Neary, sheep unit manager Gerald Kelly and a veterinarian familiar with sheep and goats will lead the discussions and activities. The event also will have information useful to goat producers, Neary said.

"Even though the program is geared to sheep production, there is much information that would overlap with meat goat production," he said.

Registration, due by Feb. 2, is $35 and can be done by completing an online registration available at https://www.ansc.purdue.edu/events/LambingSchool.pdf. Questions may be directed to Neary at (765) 494-4849 or by calling (888) EXT- INFO.

The Lambing School is sponsored by Purdue's Department of Animal Sciences and the Indiana Sheep Breeders Association.
