Cultural Exchange Program features University of Louisville Choir

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University's Black Cultural Center will kick off the spring semester with a concert by the Black Diamond Choir, a gospel group from the University of Louisville.

The concert, scheduled for 3 p.m. Feb. 4 in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall, is free and open to the public.

The 125-member choir, formed in 1969, performs a combination of traditional hymns and spirituals as well as contemporary songs. Black Diamond travels regularly around Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and Georgia.

The choir has been showcased with national recording artists including Bobby James, Lamar Campbell and Donald Lawrence. The group also won the "People's Choice Award" at the Louisville Urban League College Choir Explosion, a competition of college and university choirs from throughout the Midwest.

The performance is part of the center's Cultural Exchange Program, said Renee Thomas, director.

"The BCC Cultural Exchange Program presents an avenue for creative expression and celebration of the African-American experience," Thomas said. "The BCC performing arts ensembles exchange performances with similar groups from other colleges and universities.

"The program is designed to foster artistic excellence and promote an appreciation of African-American culture."

The Purdue Black Voices of Inspiration will be in concert at the University of Louisville campus on March 2. The exchange program encourages students to interact with and learn from each other and develop positive relationships.
