Maryland's first woman lieutenant governor to speak at Purdue
Townsend's talk, which is part of the Purdue Series on Corporate Citizenship and Ethics, will begin at 7 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall. The program is free and open to the public. Townsend served as lieutenant governor from 1995 to 2003. During her tenure, residents received more than $2.6 billion in tax returns, and Maryland's personal income tax rate was reduced for the first time in 30 years. The state's job creation rate rose from 44th to 15th in the nation. In her education role, Townsend created programs focused on citizenship and community service. She brought together law enforcement and community leaders to reduce violent crime and recruited young people for a community-policing program. Townsend has taught foreign policy at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, she has published numerous articles and serves on the boards of directors of several academic and civic organizations. The lecture series is co-sponsored by the Krannert School of Management and the College of Education's James F. Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship with support from Ford Motor Co., the Purdue Employees Federal Credit Union and CSX Transportation. Speakers chosen from a variety of disciplines investigate various aspects of business ethics and the role citizens play in corporate ethics. The lectures provide an overview of the effects of corporate ethics upon business, the economy and society as a whole. Other speakers in the series have included Lech Walesa, former president of Poland and Nobel Peace Prize winner; Rush Kidder, founder of the Institute for Global Ethics; Jerry Greenfield of Ben & Jerry's ice cream; and Arthur Martinez, former chairman and CEO of Sears.
