Free smoking quit kits to be distributed on Purdue campus

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As part of the 30th annual Great American Smokeout, the Purdue University Student Health Center and Student Wellness Office on Thursday (Nov. 16) will be offering free smoking quit kits around campus.

The Great American Smokeout is an annual event organized by the American Cancer Society that encourages smokers to quit for one day as a step toward quitting for good.

"The Great American Smokeout is particularly relevant for Indiana because 27 percent of adults in the state smoke, which is the second highest smoking rate in the nation," said Karen Donelson, general wellness coordinator for the Student Health Center. "According to the 2006 survey of Purdue students, 29 percent of the respondents said they had smoked in the previous 30-day period, so we hope the Smokeout will encourage some to quit."

The kits and other smoking cessation information will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lobby of Beering Hall. Quit kits also will be available in the Student Wellness Office on the second floor of the Student Health Center and at the Purdue pharmacy in the Heine Pharmacy Building, Room 118.

For information, contact the Student Wellness Office at (765) 494-WELL or the American Cancer Society at (765) 449-4799.
