Viennese chamber orchestra to feature Mozart at Loeb concert

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The 16-member Salzburg Chamber Soloists will perform a program of western classical music, including works from Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart, at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse.

Purdue Convocations is presenting the performance.

The chamber orchestra from the city of Mozart's birth was founded in 1991. At that time, violinist Lavard Skou-Larsen and a handful of colleagues decided to form an unusual ensemble. The aim of this ensemble was to perform orchestral chamber music with the freedom of soloists.

Skou-Larsen combed Europe and the rest of the world until he had a group of first-class musicians. In only its first year of existence, the orchestra toured the United States and Canada and by 1995 it had released two albums of Mozart's work.

Skou-Larsen, the soloists' leader and artistic director, has been invited to perform as leader, concertmaster and conductor with leading symphony and chamber orchestras in Europe and South America, including the European Union Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonietta Amsterdam, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, Deutsche Kammerakademe Neuss, Orchestra Internazionale d'Italia, Orchestre de Chambre de Geneve and Orchestra Sinfonica de Porto Alegre.

The Purdue performance will feature movements from the "Symphony in B-flat-Major" by Leopold Mozart, "Divertimento in B-flat-Major" and "Quintett (Serenade) in C-Minor" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The concert also will include works by Aulis Sallinen and Dimitri Shostakovitch.

Tickets for the Salzburg Chamber Soloists are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are $26 for adults and $16 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students.

This performance is presented with support from Westminster Village.
