Dance Kaleidoscope to present 'Carmina Burana' at Purdue's Loeb Playhouse
Purdue Convocations is presenting the performance.
Choreographed by Artistic Director David Hochoy, this full-length ballet is set to Carl Orff's well-known work of the same name.
The text of the work is based on suppressed monastic songs and poems of the 13th century - often written by dropouts from the medieval clergy. The texts were kept secret because of their earthy and voluptuous tone. German-born composer Orff created a work for orchestra, chorus and soloists that features the melodies from many movie scores.
All four previous presentations of the ballet have sold out in Indianapolis. It also has earned critical acclaim. When the ballet made its world premiere in 1995, NUVO Newsweekly called the production "extraordinary ... a wild, emotional and exotic ride." In 1997, the Indianapolis Star called it "big, bold and beautiful."
Two new dancers, Caitlin Swihart of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Justin Zuschlag of Lafayette, La., will make their Dance Kaleidoscope debuts in this production. Former soloist Jessica Johnson also will return as a guest dancer.
Tickets are $26 for adults and $18 for children 18 years and younger, Purdue students and Ivy Tech Lafayette students. Group discounts for 10 or more are available by calling (765) 496-1977. Tickets are available at the Elliott Hall and Stewart Center box offices at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. Tickets also are available through Ticketmaster outlets.
Patrons who are interested in learning more about Dance Kaleidoscope's presentation of "Carmina Burana" can attend a pre-show discussion "Introducing Carmina Burana" at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 in Stewart Center, Room 218D. Hochoy will provide insight into the company's signature performance.
Bison Financial Group is supporting this performance of Dance Kaleidoscope.
