Purdue's Vet School demonstrates expertise at Indiana State Fair

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Cats, dogs, horses and cows will take part in demonstrations and presentations by Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicine every day at the Indiana State Fair between Aug. 9-13.

A surgical team consisting of licensed veterinarians from throughout Indiana and Purdue, assisted by surgical staff and students from Purdue, will perform spay and neuter surgeries daily in front of a live audience. These demonstrations have been a popular attraction in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion for 22 years.

Daily 2 p.m. non-surgical presentations that feature live animals include:

• Wednesday (Aug. 9): Simon Kenyon, associate professor of veterinary clinical science, will talk about dairy cows.

• Thursday and Friday (Aug. 10-11): Michel Levy and Janice Sojka, both associate professors of large animal medicine and experts on horse health, will give an "endoscopic" demonstration with a slender, tubular optical instrument that shows the inside of a horse's stomach.

• Saturday (Aug. 12): Diane Bevier, an expert in dermatology and associate professor of veterinary clinical science, will discuss allergies in "Ears to You."

• Sunday (Aug. 13): Mark Hilton, clinical associate professor, and a team of students will show how dairy cows are "Nature's Recyclers."

• Wednesday (Aug. 16): Steve Thompson, director of Purdue's Small Animal Wellness Clinic, will present "Dr. Do A Lot for a Little Guy" about small, or "pocket," pets.

Indiana State Fairgrounds are located at 1202 E. 38th St., Indianapolis.
