National church conference returns to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nearly 6,000 junior high and high school students from throughout the United States will converge on campus July 2-7 for "Beyond – Challenge 2006," the Evangelical Free Church of America's national student conference.

Jeff Piehl, Evangelical Free Church of America's student ministries director and conference coordinator, said the church previously held a conference at Purdue in 2000, and the students are eager to return.

"We look forward to making a positive impact on West Lafayette through community projects," Piehl said. "We also hope to establish a church called The Bridge in the Lafayette area."

The five-day event will feature speakers, worship, training, a visual arts show and service opportunities.

"Students are challenged to go beyond the facts and figures of the Christian life for some exhilarating on-the-job training – to be, do, say and go as Jesus wants them to," Piehl said.

Dove Award winner Chris Tomlin will lead the students in worship. Daily Bible speakers will teach Isaiah 55 in morning and evening gatherings about being, doing, saying and going as Jesus desires.

The visual arts show will take place from 1-4 p.m. July 5 on the first-floor hallway of Stewart Center. Local art professionals will meet with students and evaluate their projects. The exhibit will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 3 and 4; from 9 a.m. to noon July 5; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 6.

The Evangelical Free Church of America is an association of 1,400 churches throughout the United States.
