NC State names new dean of College of Humanities and Social SciencesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Toby L. Parcel, special assistant to the provost and former dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Purdue University, has been chosen to serve as the next dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS) at North Carolina State University. She will assume her new duties Aug. 1.
"All of us at NC State are thrilled to have Dr. Parcel joining us," Nielsen said. "She brings a wealth of experience and vision from her earlier positions at both Purdue and Ohio State. She joins a group of outstanding deans both veteran and new that continues to advance NC State's quality and service to our fundamental missions. I expect the College of Humanities and Social Sciences to make great advances under Dr. Parcel's leadership." As dean of CHASS, Parcel will lead NC State's second largest college, which houses nine academic departments plus a number of interdisciplinary programs. The college serves approximately 4,000 undergraduate and 700 graduate students, and employs some 500 faculty members. "This is an exciting time for NC State, and I am delighted to be joining colleagues, staff and students at the university as dean of CHASS," Parcel said. "I am convinced that by working together, we can build upon an already strong foundation to move the college forward in its visibility and academic stature." Currently, Parcel serves as special assistant to the provost at Purdue, a position she has held for the past year. Before being named to her current post, Parcel was dean of Purdue's College of Liberal Arts from September 2002 to May 2005. As dean, she led faculty members in 11 academic departments and 13 interdisciplinary programs. Parcel went to Purdue following an 18-year stint as a faculty member and administrator at Ohio State University. At Ohio State, Parcel was chair of the Department of Sociology from July 2000 to August 2002, and was associate dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences for eight years from July 1992 to June 2000. Prior to her tenure at Ohio State, Parcel was an assistant and associate professor at the University of Iowa for seven years. Parcel has published numerous articles and chapters as well as several books in the areas of the sociology of work, work and family, and social stratification. Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and the National Research Council. She has held eight major editorial board appointments and has frequently served on panels at the National Science Foundation. Her scholarship has garnered awards from the National Council on Family Relations and the American Sociological Association. A native of Ohio, Parcel received her bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned her master's and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Washington. Parcel succeeds Linda P. Brady, who served as dean of CHASS for five years before her recent appointment as provost at the University of Oregon. David Martin, former head of NC State's Department of Psychology, will continue to serve as interim dean of CHASS until Parcel's arrival.
