One-day course covers landscaping from paper to site rendering

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Purdue University Home Landscaping Short Course, offered June 23 for the general public, provides participants with a hands-on experience and the chance to explore different landscaping options.

"The program, designed for all levels of gardeners, provides unbiased, research-based information," said Peggy Sellers, Master Gardener state program coordinator. "Each participant should learn something new and explore different landscaping options available to them."

The landscaping course, lasting from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., is located at University Inn Conference Center and Suites in West Lafayette.

"Anyone interested in beautifying their own landscape is encouraged to attend," Sellers said. "We have an excellent lineup of speakers, each with exceptional and unique experiences in the horticulture and landscape architecture field."

Program speakers and topics include:

  • Gregory Pierceall, author and professor of landscape architecture, who will explain landscape design as a process and product. Participants will start designing a landscape in the morning session and then use the information in the afternoon to determine plants and other elements that can be used in their creation.

  • Mary Keesey, Purdue Extension consumer horticulture specialist, who will discuss selecting the right plants for the landscaping site and growing trees, shrubs, perennials and vines to their fullest.

  • Matthew Kirkwood, assistant professor for horticulture and landscape architecture, who will cover the landscaping process from design to construction. Topics include how to create special paving, arbors, trellises and other landscape structures.

  • Paul Siciliano, associate professor of landscape architecture, who will speak about the history of gardening and landscaping around the world.

Registration forms can be found online. Registration costs $80 and is recommended by June 15. The fee includes lunch, refreshments and informational materials. For more information, contact Sellers at (765) 494-4713, sellersp@purdue.edu.
