Goat and sheep workshop teaches parasite control

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A workshop highlighting ways to prevent and control goat and sheep parasites will be held July 1 at the Animal Sciences Research and Education Center at Purdue University.

The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and focuses on the control of internal parasites. Included in the program will be FAMACHA training and certification.

"The FAMACHA system of parasite control is a new technology used in small ruminants to help control internal parasites and to reduce the incidence of parasite populations becoming resistant to deworming drugs," said Mike Neary, Purdue Extension sheep specialist.

Internal parasitism is the largest health concern for goat and sheep producers, he said.

"The workshop will cover important topics producers and industry support personnel can use to control internal parasitism," Neary said.

The workshop consists of a series of lectures and hands-on activities, including developing a whole-herd control program, management practices to reduce parasitism, proper methods of deworming and conducting fecal egg counts.

The workshop cost is $35 per person and $20 for each additional family member. Pre-registration is required by June 23. Registration forms are available on line for sheep producers or for meat goat producers. These forms are also available by contacting Neary at (765) 494-4849.
