Peers rank Purdue engineer as a top researcher in his field
Gavriel Salvendy, a professor in Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering and head of the Tsinghua University Department of Industrial Engineering in Beijing, China, studies human factors and ergonomics. His work was recognized as being ranked No. 1, tied with two others, in scientific, technical and engineering contributions to ergonomics in a survey by the members of the national ergonomics societies from 42 countries. The survey was conducted by editors of Ergonomia, an international scientific publication based in Poland. It is published by the Committee on Ergonomics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the International Ergonomics Association. Human factors and ergonomics concern the design, operation and management of work environments in industries including information technology, automotive, aircraft, communication and consumer products, as well as in service-sector organizations. It became a field of study during World War II as engineers changed aircraft cockpit designs to better fit the pilots. "Gavriel is an internationally recognized expert in this field," said Nagabhushana Prabhu, head of the Purdue School of Industrial Engineering. "The results of his research have been adopted in numerous countries around the world." Salvendy is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and was the first individual elected from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society to the academy. He also is the founding editor of two scientific journals: the International Journal on Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing. Salvendy is the fourth person to receive an honorary doctorate in the 45-year history of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the author of more than 430 scientific publications in industrial engineering, human factors and ergonomics.
The U.S. News and World Report ranked the Purdue School of Industrial Engineering, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, second in the nation in undergraduate studies and fourth in the nation for graduate studies.
