Purdue Research Park company wins national defense industries awardWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Simulex Inc., a company at the Purdue Research Park, has won this year's modeling and simulation award from the National Training Systems Association. The award was presented today (Tuesday, May 2) at the Department of Defense Modeling and Simulation Conference in Baltimore. Alok Chaturvedi, founder and CEO of Simulex and the architect of the technology, said the company has been presenting large-scale simulations to both military- and civilian-based organizations. "We have created cutting-edge technology that allows planners, analysts and operators to develop and assess policies and courses of actions in a synthetic environment where the cost of making a mistake is minimal. Human 'players' interact with tens of millions of artificial agents in complex scenarios, such as natural and manmade disasters, in order to develop strategies for response and recovery," said Chaturvedi, who also is a Krannert School professor of management and director of the Purdue Homeland Security Institute at Discovery Park. "All of us at Simulex are gratified to win this award because of the prestige and important mission of the U.S. Joint Forces Command." Simulex's Synthetic Environment for Analysis and Simulation, or SEAS, won the award for its "modeling of political, military, economic, societal, infrastructure, and information aspects of kinetic and non-kinetic warfare," according to the award criteria. The award commended the company for being "a catalyst for transforming the methods used by the Experimentation Directorate of the United States Joint Forces Command to use the effects-based approach to investigate concepts such as security, stabilization and reconstruction operations to support training and analysis." The Department of Defense Modeling and Simulation Conference brings together government and military executives, strategic planners and senior technical managers to discuss and examine needs and gaps associated with policies, procedures and practices in the defense department.
