April 24, 2006 Super brains to compete in Academic Superbowl at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Approximately 720 students from 97 Indiana high schools will participate in the Indiana Association of School Principals Academic Super Bowl competition at Purdue University on May 6.
The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. A list of participating schools is available online. Teams of up to five students will compete in six events, including social studies, mathematics, English, science, fine arts and an interdisciplinary team event. Teams will have 20 seconds to provide a written response to questions flashed on a screen, after which the correct answer will be announced. Three high schools, West Lafayette Jr./ Sr. High School in West Lafayette, Brebeuf High School in Indianapolis and Columbus East in Columbus, qualified students for five of the six events in regional competitions. Gerald Mohr, the Indiana Association of School Principals associate executive director, said competition participants are eager to demonstrate their mastery of the subjects. "Many teams begin preparing for this competition early in the school year," Mohr said. "The Academic Super Bowl sparks a love of learning and a strong drive to succeed. It's quite lively and active." Schools will be divided four classes based on school size, and a champion will be named for each class. "This is a uniquely Hoosier event," Mohr said. "They come away knowing that they are among the best in the state." Academic competitions sponsored by the IASP receive financial support through the Purdue Office of Engagement.
