Conference offers teachers information on financial literacy programsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Indiana JumpStart Coalition is holding a conference April 28 in the Gene B. Glick Junior Achievement Education Center in Indianapolis for teachers interested in information about financial literacy education programs.The coalition, whose members include both the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service and the Indiana Council for Economic Education, is offering the 2006 Summit for teachers just starting to teach financial literacy education or for those who have already implemented programs and want to expand their knowledge. Separate sessions will be offered for teachers who teach elementary school and those who teach middle and high school. The schedule for the conference follows: Registration is from 8:30-9 a.m. The opening session will be held from 9-10:10 a.m. and will include keynote speaker Michael Wood, vice president of Teenage Research Unlimited, a company that helps its clients build their teen expertise. From 10:20-11:30 a.m., "Financial Literacy in Action" sessions, which are 70-minute presentations that introduce educational economic programs available for students, will be held. There is also an idea fair with 20-minute table talks and exhibits. Lunch will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. From 12:30-1:40 p.m., the "Financial Literacy in Action" sessions and the idea fair will resume. "The "Financial Literacy in Action" sessions are present a specific program in detail, whereas the table talks at the idea fair are more of a quick look at available programs," said Elizabeth Kiss, Purdue Extension specialist. "Financial Literacy in Action" session topics will include the Financial Literacy Challenge Program (InCharge? Education Foundation Inc.), Family Economics and Financial Education (Indiana Department of Education), The Money Bus: A Mobile Financial Literacy Classroom (Networks Financial Institute), Exchange City Experimental Learning Program (Junior Achievement of Central Indiana), Finance Park (Junior Achievement of Central Indiana), Take Stock in Indiana (Indiana Council for Economic Education) and Common Cents (State Farm Insurance). The closing session will be from 1:50-2:50 p.m. Registration is $30 per participant and must be postmarked by April 14.
