Workshop to cover various aspects of raising meat goats

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Participants of the 2006 Midwest Meat Goat Workshop will have the opportunity to learn about issues and practices relevant to today’s producers.

The workshop will be held at the Clay County 4-H Fairgrounds in Brazil, Ind., from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 8 and will include the following speakers:

• Preston Faris of Sonora, Texas, a nationally recognized meat goat producer who has judged numerous shows around the United States.

• Jason Tower, manager of the Southern Indiana Purdue University Agricultural Center, who is working with the University of Kentucky on a meat goat research project.

• Nicole Ferguson and Michel Levy of the College of Veterinary Medicine, who conduct research on parasitic resistance issues.

The speakers will discuss topics such as how to get started, selection, care, feeding, showmanship, exhibition tips, grazing/pasture management, planning for exhibition or production, parasite resistance management, and other general management issues. During lunch a vendor fair will be held, followed by a panel discussion comprised of producers and Purdue staff.

"We hope that this workshop will be a precursor to kick off an Indiana Meat Goat Association," said Mark Evans, Purdue Extension agriculture and natural resources educator in Clay and Owen counties. "We plan to talk about this idea following lunch in the panel discussion."

Registration is $10 for adults, $5 for youth ages 18 and under, and $20 for families. Early registration must be postmarked by Mar. 31; after this date $5 will be added for registration at the door. Registration fees are non-refundable and include materials, speaker fees and facility fees. The Clay County 4-H Goat Club will have lunch and snacks available for the duration of the workshop. For information, contact Mark Evans at (812) 448-9041.

Purdue Extension in Clay County and the Clay County 4-H Goat Club are sponsoring the workshop.
