Purdue finishes theater season with 'The Winter's Tale'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue Theatre will complete the 2006 spring season with William Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale," the second production to be staged in the new Nancy T. Hansen Theatre.
"The Winter's Tale" is one of Shakespeare's romance plays, combining tragedy with comedy. Sicilian King Leontes is tormented with jealousy when he suspects that his wife, Hermione, is having an affair with his friend Polixenes, visiting King of Bohemia. Leontes' obsessive rage destroys everything that he holds dear, but wondrous transformations allow for rebirth, redemption and forgiveness. Casazza said he views "The Winter's Tale" as a fairy tale. "I'm drawn to the magical transformations and miraculous inner changes these characters go through," Casazza said. "I love the idea of 'Once upon a time' it means that anything can happen." Casazza has directed seven previous productions for Purdue Theatre. He is also a playwright, staging shows in four states. Purdue's production of "The Winter's Tale" will feature elaborate costumes, advanced lighting techniques and intricate set designs to portray the play's two diverse kingdoms a cold, structured Sicilian court and an earthy Bohemian countryside, Casazza said. A large cast of more than 30 actors will add depth to the show through original music and dance. The Nancy T. Hansen Theatre is still in its inaugural season, having just concluded Purdue Theatre's first production, "The College Widow." Located in Yue-Kong Pao Hall of Performing Arts, the theater has state-of-the-art acoustics, improved sightlines and new seating. Admission for "The Winter's Tale" is $16 for the general public, $12 for seniors 62 and over, and $9 for students. Tickets are available at the Loeb, Elliott and Yue-Kong Pao Hall box offices or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.
