University Residences honors service staff members

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University Residences will honor service staff workers with a day of fun, games and celebration.

Service Worker Recognition Day will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday (March 16) with events at several Purdue residences. The event is modeled after Purdue's Service Staff Olympics, which took place in 1989, 1991 and 1993.

Terry Ashlock, director of facilities for University Residences, said the event is a way to recognize the work done by the service staff in each of Purdue's residences and dining courts and to thank them for their contributions to the lives of the more than 11,000 residents.

"These facilities could not operate without the hardworking, dedicated maintenance workers, food service workers, office staff and other service staff at University Residences," Ashlock said. "They are the university's unsung heroes and deserve recognition of their daily service to provide Purdue students with inviting, well-kept homes and award-winning meals."

Activities will include games and contests based on some typical job functions. For example, workers can compete in an obstacle course with a floor buffer machine.

Teams of employees from each residence will be able to gain points for their hall in the different games to determine an overall winning facility.

University Residences is a completely self-supporting unit of the university. All projects are paid for by user fees, bond sales and operational savings, with no funds coming from tuition or state appropriations.
