March 2, 2006 Fruit tree workshop to take place at Meigs FarmWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A fruit tree, grape pruning and spring management workshop will take place next week at Purdue University's Meigs Farm south of Lafayette. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon March 11. The farm is located at the Throckmorton-Purdue Agricultural Center on U.S. 231. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the proper procedures for pruning and training fruit trees and grapes. Purdue horticulture staff also will discuss management practices for backyard fruit tree and grape growers. Paul Howard and Bruce Bordelon, both of the Department of Horticulture, will give a presentation on grapes and brambles. A presentation on fruit trees will be given by Burk Thompson of the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources, horticultural crops manager Nate Linder and Rick Foster of the Department of Entomology. The workshop will begin at 9 a.m. in the facility's farm shop and then will move outdoors. "Since this is a workshop, we will be out in the orchard and grape arbor. Wed like to encourage participants to come prepared for the weather," said Greg Bossaer, a Purdue Extension specialist in White County. There is no cost for the program, but those interested in participating should contact their local Purdue Extension office by March 9. Participants who are also in an advanced master gardener program may receive three hours of credit for attending. This workshop is sponsored by the Meigs Farm, the Purdue Department of Horticulture and the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service offices of Benton, Cass, Carroll, Clinton, Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Pulaski, Tippecanoe, Warren and White counties.
