Students well-prepared to travel abroad
All students going abroad through our office, or with a student organization officially recognized by the Office of the Dean of Students, take part in pre-departure meetings and are provided with health, insurance and safety information. We counsel them about safe behavior and what they can do to minimize risk. We also provide them with information about appropriate sources of information, such as country-specific Web sites, so they can stay informed while they are overseas.
We urge our students who stay at a partner university to keep in contact with the international students office there. For those traveling with faculty or staff, we ask that the students coordinate their activities with those leaders.
Then, should something occur for which we need to contact these students, Purdue contacts the partner university's international students office or the Purdue faculty or staff leaders, who in turn contact the students.
Our office works closely with several others at Purdue, including the Office of Risk Management, to consider any health or safety risks in a particular country where our students may study. Should we determine that the risks are too great, we will cancel programs and advise any students who may be there that they should leave.
The study abroad experience has never been more vital to a students education. We also want it to be a safe one.
