Woodland and wildlife workshop to take place in Ohio River ValleyWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A workshop for woodland owners in the area where Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio meet will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 25 at the Diamond Oaks Career Development Campus in Cincinnati.The workshop will feature forestry and wildlife experts from all three states to present a variety of topics relevant to woodland owners. Morning sessions will focus on wildlife topics, while the afternoon session will center more on forest topics. Special programming is available for K-12 youths who come with their families. "We're just starting the workshop in southeastern Indiana. We hope many forestland families who own and are taking care of our woodland regions attend," said William Hoover, Purdue University professor of forestry and natural resources and a Purdue Extension forestry specialist. Purdue speakers and topics will include: Brian Miller, a Purdue Extension wildlife specialist, will speak about woodland wildlife management. Hoover and Tammy Cushing of the University of Kentucky will speak about woodland recordkeeping and timber taxes in a two-hour session. Hoover also will speak about exploring conservation easements. Harvey Holt, a Purdue Extension forestry specialist, will speak on controlling invasive plants. Other topics to be covered at the workshop include emerald ash borer, timber marketing, developing a woodland management plan, woodland ponds, myths and truths about coyotes, tree identification, crop tree release, amphibians and reptiles in the woods, measuring your forest, an introduction to bird identification, wood identification, an introduction to tree planting, exploring the forest understory, rare mammals of the Ohio River Valley, and an introduction to global positioning systems. Lunch, which is included with the registration, will feature speaker Wendell Berry, a farmer and author of more than 40 books of fiction, poetry and essays. Berry, a native and resident of Henry County, Ky., will give a talk on "Your Forests, Our Future." Registration by March 13 is $25 and $30 after that date. Youth registration is $5 and includes a pizza lunch. Preregistration is required.
