Elderhostel summer programs feature singing, educational classesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Vocalists who are at least 55 years old can register to fine-tune their talent at the Elderhostel Choral Music Workshop June 18-23 at Purdue University.A new companion course called the All-You-Can-Learn Buffet will be offered during the same time period. It will give participants a chance to learn what Purdue is doing in areas such as engineering, food sciences, nursing and veterinary medicine. During the weeklong choral workshop, participants will sing, rehearse and prepare choral arrangements under the direction of Brian Breed, Purdue Musical Organizations director. Breed, who oversees the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and the PMO Christmas Show, is a protégé of master choral director Fred Waring. Participants may stay in an air-conditioned, on-campus residence hall or commute. The week will conclude with a free community concert in Hillenbrand Hall at 2 p.m. June 23. Forty-five singers from eight states, including Georgia, California and New Jersey, participated in last year's class. Elderhostel coordinator Mary Gardner says the workshop remains a popular event that the PMO staff looks forward to each year. "This is the 12th year for the choral workshop, and it is always a highlight of my summer," Gardner said. "We look forward to reuniting with our friends back on campus for another fun-filled, yet intensive, choral learning workshop. Many alums come back again and again for the new programs, but some are returning for their first visit back since graduation. This gives them the chance to revisit many old memories, and they are always amazed at the changes and new things happening here." Registration for each course is $175 per person. The choral course is program number 2597, and the buffet course is 13807. For information on the workshops or for registration materials, contact Gardner at (765) 494-5760.
