Curriculum studies expert to speak at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A well-known education expert from Canada will be featured next month during the Purdue University College of Education's second annual Curriculum and Instruction Distinguished Lecture Series.

William F. Pinar, the Canada research chairman in curriculum studies and the director of the Centre for the Study of the Internationalization of Curriculum Studies at the University of British Columbia, will speak 4:30-5:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in Stewart Center, Room 206.

His speech, "Exile and Estrangement in the Internationalization of Curriculum Studies," is free and open to the public.

Pinar's areas of interest include curriculum theory, international studies and gender issues. He received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University in 1969, 1970 and 1972, respectively. He also taught high school English from 1969-71.

Before coming to the University of British Columbia, Pinar taught curriculum theory at Louisiana State University, where he was the St. Bernard Parish Alumni Endowed Professor. He also has been the Frank Talbott Professor at the University of Virginia and the A. Lindsay O'Connor Professor of American Institutions at Colgate University.

He is the founding editor of the journal JCT and co-founded the Bergamo Conference on Curriculum Theory and Classroom Practice. Pinar is the founder and current president of the International Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies and the founder of its American affiliate, the American Association for the Advancement of Curriculum Studies, for which he is conference committee chairman.

In addition, Pinar is the author of several books, including "Race, Religion and a Curriculum of Reparation," "What is Curriculum Theory?" and "The Gender of Racial Politics and Violence in America," and many journal articles.
