More than 100 bands compete at Purdue Jazz FestivalWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. North High School of Bloomington and John Hersey High School of Arlington Heights, Ill., were the two big winners at the 16th annual Purdue Jazz Festival held Saturday (Jan. 21) on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.A total of 114 high schools and middle schools representing 58 schools from four states Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin attended the 2006 festival sponsored by Purdue University Bands. It was the largest festival in the event's history. In each of the festival's eight different competition venues the designation of Honor Band/Combo was given to the top-scoring ensemble in that particular venue. The Bloomington North Big Band No. 2 was named an Honor Band, and Bloomington North Combos No. 1 and No. 3 also were named Honor Combos. The John Hersey Big Bands No. 1 and No. 2 were designated as Honor Bands. Other ensembles winning the festival's top designation were North Central High School Big Band No. 1 from Indianapolis; Champaign Central High School Big Band No. 1 from Champaign, Ill.; and the North Central High School Big Band. The Honor Band in the middle school competition went to Edison Middle School Big Band of Champaign, Ill. Winners by venue were:
