Appointments and promotions

– Purdue University Residences has announced the appointment of new general managers at four residence halls:

• Denton Sederquist has been named general manager of Tarkington Hall. Sederquist has spent the last two-and-a-half years as the residential life manager at Wiley Hall. He received a bachelor's degree in 1994 in recreation management and a master's degree in higher education administration in 1997, both from Purdue. While a student at Purdue, Sederquist worked as a resident assistant and staff resident at Wiley Hall and Cary Quadrangle.

• Loribeth Hettinger is the new general manager for Shreve Hall. Hettinger has been at Purdue for more than 10 years, including working in the Purdue Memorial Union and in dining services at Cary Quadrangle and Wiley Hall. Most recently, she served as food manager at Tarkington Hall. Hettinger earned a bachelor's degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management (now hospitality and tourism management) from Purdue in 1981.

• Elizabeth Hartley has been named the general manager of Hillenbrand Hall. Before moving to Hillenbrand, Hartley spent the last 13 years working at Earhart Hall, first as the assistant manager and then eight years as the general manager. For the past two years, she also served as the general manager for Shreve Hall, managing both facilities. She earned a bachelor's degree from Purdue in health and recreation.

• Ken Field is the new general manager at Earhart Hall. Previously, he worked for seven years as the coordinator of retail sales for University Residences and, most recently, spent two years as general manager for Wiley Hall. He earned a bachelor's degree in restaurant, hotel and institutional management at Purdue in 1984, and a master's of business administration from Purdue's Krannert School of Management in 2003.

– Renee Mullen has accepted the position of director of development for the College of Consumer and Family Sciences. Mullen previously worked at the University of Illinois' College of Veterinary Medicine as the assistant dean for advancement.

– Eric Richards has accepted the position of director of development for class gifts.

Richards is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Rotary Club of Indianapolis and previously worked as development director for Training Inc.

Faculty and staff honors

– Gavriel Salvendy, a professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University, will be a keynote speaker during a high-level scientific and policy-making meeting in Paris, France, from Dec. 12-13. "The European Commission is planning to spend well in excess of $1 billion on basic research in information and communications technologies over the next seven years, and this meeting is being held to help determine the major direction for this research," said Salvendy, chaired professor and head of the department of industrial engineering at Tshingua University in China. Salvendy is one of two keynote speakers during the European Commission's High-Level Workshop on New Directions for Basic Research on Information and Communication Technologies. The other is Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, who is the 1997 Nobel Prize winner in physics. A publication-quality photograph of Gavriel Salvendy is available.
