The dance ensemble is part of Deeply Rooted Productions, a non-profit arts organization dedicated to expressing African-American dance and theater through educational programs and dance and theater productions. BCC artist-in-residence Kevin Iega Jeff founded the company in 1995. "Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre is a professional dance ensemble that performs the work of nationally renowned choreographers," said BCC director Renee Thomas. Jeff has more than 15 years of experience in artistic direction and management. A choreographer, director, teacher and performer, he formerly served as artistic director of the Joseph Holmes Chicago Dance Theater. The Chicago Sun-Times said of a Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre performance: "Yet it was Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre, the Chicago-based dance company that uses modern dance vocabulary in unusually dynamic ways, that had the most riveting impact." Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre has performed in venues including Aaron Davis Hall in New York; International Association of Black Dance Showcases in San Diego, Dallas and Washington D.C.; and Shubert Theater, Athenaeum Theatre, Auditorium Theatre, and The Dance Center of Columbia College Chicago.
