Purdue faculty members to receive university teaching honor

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Teaching Academy, which provides leadership for the improvement of undergraduate, graduate and outreach teaching, will induct nine new fellows and five associate fellows at a recognition ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Oct. 24) in the faculty lounges at Purdue Memorial Union.

President Martin C. Jischke will give the keynote address at the event. Provost Sally Mason will recognize each new academy member with a certificate. A reception will follow the ceremony, which is open to Purdue faculty and staff.

Fellows and associate fellows are chosen by the academy's executive council from nominations by each college or school. Each year, every college and school is allowed to nominate one faculty member for membership as a fellow in the Teaching Academy and one graduate student or staff member for membership as an associate fellow.

Winners are chosen based on their outstanding contributions to teaching and learning on the campus.

Four of the nine new fellows already have won Charles B. Murphy Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Awards, which automatically qualifies each of them for status as a fellow in the Teaching Academy. They are:

• Janet M. Alsup, associate professor of English education.

• Eckhard A. Groll, professor of mechanical engineering.

• Stanley L. Hem, professor of industrial and physical pharmacy.

• Donald A. Petrin, associate professor of aviation technology.

Others to be inducted as fellows at the ceremony include:

• Charles A. Calahan, assistant clinical professor of family studies.

• Teresa T. Doughty, associate professor of educational studies.

• Kirby D. Hayes, assistant professor of food science.

• Julie C. Novak, professor of nursing.

• James J. Walker, associate professor of basic medical sciences.

The five associate fellows are:

• Darek A. Bulinski, graduate student in agronomy.

• Jason T. Harris, graduate research assistant in health sciences.

• Lynette A. Osborne, graduate student in sociology and anthropology.

• James C. Price, graduate student in mathematics.

• Ian C.S. Sinapuelas, graduate research assistant in management.
