September 8, 2005 Country artists Jo Dee Messina, Sugarland to perform at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue Convocations will present country star Jo Dee Messina with special guests Sugarland 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in Elliott Hall of Music.
Born in Massachusetts, Messina's first musical influences were from albums by Alabama and Hank Williams Jr. She made her first public appearance at age 6 and by age 13 had her own band. At age 19 she moved to Nashville and in 1996 released her first album. Self-titled, it was produced by Byron Gallimore and Tim McGraw. Her career boasts eight chart-topping hits from five albums. Her most recent album, "Delicious Surprise," includes the hit by the same name and "My Give A Damn's Busted," which was her first single released off the album. Messina's other hits include "Heads Carolina, Tails California," "I'm Alright," "Burn," "Lesson on Leaving" and "That's the Way." Sugarland, currently touring with Brad Paisley and Sara Evans, will open for Messina. Sugarland is the Atlanta-based trio including Jennifer Nettles, Kristen Hall and Kristian Bush. Mississippi-born Nettles, the group's lead singer, fronted the band Soul Miner's Daughter and performed at Lillith Fair with her own band. Hall, who has released two solo albums, wrote most of the melodies for "Twice the Speed of Life," the group's debut album. Kristian Bush rounds out the trio. He was half of the duo Billy Pilgrim, which released two albums on the Atlantic Records label. Sugarland recently paired with rocker Jon Bon Jovi for CMT's Crossroads. The episode is scheduled to air Sept. 16 on CMT. General public tickets are $32. Tickets for children age 18 and younger and Purdue students are $29. Ticket prices include a $2 facilities fee.
