July 6, 2005 Purdue announces Schleman Scholarship awardsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University announced that eight Indiana students will receive the Helen B. Schleman Scholarships, a program that provides funds for non-traditional undergraduate students to attend Purdue. Recipients of the $1,600 scholarships are Kerry Canarsky, a freshman in consumer and family sciences from Lafayette; Kenneth Gerhardt, a junior in electrical engineering technology from Lafayette; Lori Hullinger, a sophomore in organizational leadership and supervision from West Lafayette; Alan Koster, a sophomore in organizational leadership and supervision from Lafayette; Laura Moore, a junior in elementary education from Lafayette; Larry Owens, a senior in secondary education from Monticello; Brandy Spenard, a freshman in consumer and family sciences from Lafayette; and Julia Zimmerman, a senior in interdisciplinary film studies from Crawfordsville. Helen B. Schleman began her Purdue career in 1934 as director of the university's first women's residence hall. After a stint in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves during World War II, she returned to the West Lafayette campus as dean of women from 1947 to 1968. Schleman Hall on the Purdue campus is named for her. The Schleman Scholarships have been awarded since 2002 to recipients based on financial need, educational and career focus, and letters of recommendation.
