June 1, 2005 Purdue to offer rental lofts for some university residence hallsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Students living in four Purdue residence halls planning to use lofts will have to rent them from the university, starting this fall. The lofts, which are used to lift beds above the floor to create additional living space in the rooms, will be the only type allowed in Tarkington Hall, Windsor Halls, the east wing of Earhart Hall and all but the south building of Cary Quadrangle. The cost for one year of rental is $55. Terry Ashlock, director of facilities for University Residences, said the new rental program is one step in a process to provide safe, uniform lofts for each of the halls at Purdue. "As we make renovations to halls, we also replace the furniture," Ashlock said. "The replacement beds are designed to use a factory-made loft. For students who want a loft option, we will be able to have them in their rooms at check-in." More information and loft-reservation forms are available online. Students living in Purdue's other residences with the exception of Young Hall, which does not allow lofts can purchase, build or rent a loft from any vendor. In these halls, University Residences has contracted a rental option with Bedloft.com as an approved provider of high-quality metal lofts. They are available for $95 per year. Pre-ordered lofts will be waiting in students' rooms when they arrive in the fall. "All lofts will be inspected to ensure they are freestanding and must allow for a clean path to the room's door and window in case of fire." Ashlock said. Purdue University operates 15 student residences for students: Cary Quadrangle, Earhart Hall, Harrison Hall, Hawkins Hall, Hillenbrand Hall, Hilltop Apartments, McCutcheon Hall, Meredith Hall, Owen Hall, Purdue Village, Shreve Hall, Tarkington Hall, Wiley Hall, Windsor Halls and Young Hall. The residence halls are home to more than 11,000 students, the most of any university that does not require its students to live on campus.
