WESTVILLE, Ind. – Purdue has named Charles O. "Chip" Rutledge as the university's vice president for research, a position he has held on an interim basis since 2002.

The Purdue Board of Trustees confirmed the appointment at its meeting today (Friday, May 20) at the Purdue North Central campus.

"This is an extremely pivotal position at a critical juncture in the development of Purdue's research program," Provost Sally Mason said. "Chip Rutledge is a world-class scientist, as well as the founding executive director of our bold new research enterprise – Discovery Park. He is leading a revolutionary initiative that brings together faculty from a wide variety of disciplines to tackle the complex problems of the 21st century. Management faculty are working alongside nurses and communication specialists; statisticians are joining computer scientists and virologists; geneticists are working with engineers.

"We're trying things never done before anywhere, and we are succeeding. Much credit for that success goes to Dr. Rutledge's efforts, expertise and experience."

Rutledge, who will serve as vice president for research through December 2007, served 15 years as dean of Purdue's College of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences. He was appointed executive director of Discovery Park in 2001.

"This has been an enormously exciting time at Purdue," Rutledge said. "Purdue is attracting not only the best students and faculty, but we also are much more competitive for research dollars that will reap benefits for the state of Indiana."

Purdue's sponsored research income has grown 60 percent over the past five years, to $394 million in the last fiscal year (2003-2004). The funding comes from federal grants, industry, foundations, state and local governments, and private sources.

Rutledge holds a doctoral degree in pharmacology from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Kansas.

He came to Purdue from the University of Kansas, where he was professor and chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the School of Pharmacy from 1975-87. While at Kansas, he also was associate director of the Center for Biomedical Research and held a joint position as professor of pharmacology at the Victoria College of Pharmacy in Victoria, Australia. He began his career as a faculty member at the University of Colorado's Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine.

Rutledge has served as president of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. He is a member of numerous professional organizations and a fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.

He is the author of 150 papers or abstracts in the field of neuropharmacology. His research explores drugs used to treat Parkinson's disease and examine the effect of amphetamines on the nervous system.
