Hawkins Hall students dancing around the globe

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Hawkins Hall residents will have an opportunity to see dances from around the world and learn more about their neighbors' cultures at an event this weekend.

The hall will offer Diversity Through Dance at 6:15 p.m. Sunday (April 10) in the Boiler Metro, located on the ground floor of Hawkins. The event will feature performances and demonstrations of several different types of dance from around the world, including several performed by Hawkins Hall residents.

The event is free and open to residents of Hawkins Hall.

Fara Ariswalla and Richelle Mercer, the resident assistants who planned the event, said one goal is to help bridge the differences between the many cultures and nations represented by the students living in Hawkins Hall. The hall's 790 residents –mostly graduate students – represent more than 50 countries.

The event will feature campus and community groups demonstrating dances, including ballroom dancing, belly dancing, traditional Indian dances and swing. Each group involved includes Hawkins Hall residents.

Refreshments from around the world also will be served, including falafel, samosas and different types of desserts.
