There are robots at Purdue

Blair Hickey, ASIMO technology circuit host, and ASIMO, the world's most advanced humanoid robot, demonstrate a number of dance moves before a capacity crowd of more than 1,000 at Purdue University's Loeb Playhouse today (March 10).

The event kicked off Robotics Week at Purdue, a nine-day tribute to robotics. Purdue is the only place in Indiana that the robot visited as part of the "ASIMO Technology Circuit University Tour." Honda Motor Co. began development of ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative MObility, in 1986. The robot, which stands 4-feet tall and weighs 115 pounds, can walk forward and backward, kick a soccer ball, balance on one leg, dance and climb stairs. Other robotic events at Purdue include the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Boilermaker Regional Robotics Competition, a competition in which high school students from Indiana and nine other states pits robots the student teams built in a three-on-three tournament against each other, to be held March 17-19 in the Purdue Armory. The week also recognizes robotic research at Purdue, including robotic pets, robot vision, robotics in the workplace and robotic movement.
