Purdue's 2004 highlights captured on video

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 50th edition of the Purdue Newsreel, a video collection of university highlights from 2004, is now available.

The 19-minute program, produced by the Broadcast Services unit of the Office of University Relations, can be viewed on the Web or is available from the Undergraduate Library in the Purdue Undergraduate Library. The video also can be purchased from the Purdue Alumni Association.

The video, "Raising the Bar," is sponsored by the Alumni Association, Alumni Foundation and Office of the President. It is shown to Purdue alumni clubs around the world.

The 2004 newsreel is narrated by 1981 Purdue graduate Tim Newton, director of external relations and communication for the Krannert School of Management. The program was produced and directed by Ray Cubberley, director of broadcast services in university relations.

The program can be viewed on Purdue's Web site. A DVD or VHS tape of the newsreel can be purchased for $19.95, plus $3 for shipping and handling, from the Purdue Alumni Association, Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center, Attn: Sharon Martin, 403 Wood St., West Lafayette, IN 47907-2007; telephone (765) 494-5175.

Highlights in the 2004 video include: an update on Purdue's $1.5 billion campaign; groundbreakings for Armstrong Hall, the E-Enterprise Center, the Spurgeon Golf Training Center and the veterinary radiation therapy facility; dedications of the Dauch Alumni Center, the Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, the Ford Dining Court, a new lawn in front of the Memorial Union, the Pao Visual and Performing Arts Building, Pfendler Hall of Agriculture and Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering; unveiling of plans for a campus center for IUPUI; No. 1 rankings for the Purdue Research Park and the Krannert School of Management; 40th anniversary celebrations for the College of Technology and for Indiana-Purdue Ft. Wayne; Professor of the Year Nicholas Giordano; the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest; an archeology dig in Lafayette; successful treatment of spinal cord injuries in dogs by the Paralysis Research Center; the renaming of eight academic schools as colleges; new administrators; and a new director for the Latino Cultural Center.

Other events in the video include: Todd Coleman being named as new executive director of the Alumni Association; the retirement of former PAA executive director Larry Preo; Special Boilermaker Awards; Young Alumni Awards; Citizenship Awards; the Gala Weekend alumni march; the alumni Founder's Day banquet; singing by the Glee Club and Heart and Soul; Homecoming events on the Purdue Mall, including the 50th anniversary of the Golden Girl; changes in eating areas inside the Memorial Union; the Purdue Crew Club successes; the NCAA appearance by women's volleyball; diving honors by Carrie McCambridge; highlights from men's and women's basketball, including the hiring of Matt Painter as associate head coach and Gene Keady receiving the Naismith Award; highlights from football, including keeping the Old Oaken Bucket and the trip to the Sun Bowl; and closing comments from Alumni Association President Tamara Morse.
