Pappy's Sweet Shop to revisit 1950s prices Thursday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In celebration of its recent renovation, Pappy's Sweet Shop in the Purdue Memorial Union on Thursday (Jan. 27) will offer a "1950s Rollback" campaign during dinner hours.

The rollback will take place from 6-10 p.m. and will feature 1950s prices on many of the restaurant's meal offerings.

Among those foods discounted to 1950s prices for the event are hamburgers, which will be priced at 30 cents each, and grilled cheese sandwiches, which will be marked down to 20 cents each. Additionally, French fries will be priced at 20 cents per order while soft drinks will be marked down to 25 cents each.

Thursday's dinnertime event also will feature a 10-minute hamburger-eating contest beginning at 8 p.m. While participants are no longer being sought, the public can watch the contest. Pappy's also will offer prizes to all restaurant patrons who show up for dinner wearing 1950s-era clothing.

Pappy's Sweet Shop first opened in the Purdue Memorial Union in 1927. After a $1.9 million renovation, the restaurant reopened in the fall of 2004. The newly renovated restaurant still serves many of its trademark dishes, including ice cream, hamburgers and soda fountain creations such as shakes, malts, cones and sundaes.
