Online course offers animal nutrition education

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue is offering an online animal nutrition course that meets the admission requirements for the university's School of Veterinary Medicine.

"Principles of Animal Nutrition covers five main areas," said Dale Forsyth, associate professor of animal sciences in the College of Agriculture. "Students will learn about nutrients, digestive systems, feeds, ration balancing and livestock feeding. The course touches nearly every subject in basic animal nutrition."

The self-paced course is targeted to students from Purdue regional campuses, other institutions or the general public. Students have until March 13 to sign up for the spring term and have up to one year to complete the course. Current college students and the general public should have taken at least two years of college and freshman chemistry.

Course curriculum is primarily based online through Purdue's WebCT program, but also includes textbook readings, homework assignments and three exams. All students are required to find someone to administer the exams according to the course guidelines, Forsyth said.

For information about fees or registration, contact Dennis McElhoe, distance learning coordinator, at (765)-494-1434, dlmcelhoe@purdue.edu. Purdue West Lafayette campus students who are interested in the course can sign up for a four-week intensive session taught on campus during May.
