January 20, 2005 Motivational speaker to kick off spring lecture seriesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Andrea Mosby, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, will speak to Purdue University students Tuesday (Jan. 25) in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall as part of the spring Leadership Lecture Series. Mosby's presentation, which is the first of four events planned for the series, begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. The series is sponsored by the Student Activities and Organizations area of the Office of the Dean of Students and will focus on campus leadership. Mosby will present "D.E.C.I.S.I.O.N.S.," an acronym she developed to emphasize the nine fundamental aspects of her program. "Using words such as 'determination' and 'control,' Mosby's program offers a practical guide that can be put into action immediately as students begin to consider their future," said Bridget Williams Golden, assistant dean of students for student activities and organizations. "Her personal and professional success stories fit well into our Leadership Lecture Series." Mosby has been a motivational speaker for 17 years, talking to students, business leaders and community groups around the country. She began learning about the important part decision-making skills play in one's quest for personal success at the age of 16, when she discovered she was pregnant, and developed her program more formally while in college. Mosby earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Denver, followed by a master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Colorado. "We believe that all students, as well as staff, faculty and community members, have the ability to lead," Golden said. "The point of the Leadership Lecture Series is to help student leaders learn new information as well as to assist emerging leaders along their leadership path." Other speakers scheduled to take part in the series include Elaine Penn, special projects director at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and motivational speaker Michael Poll. Those talks are scheduled for Feb. 12 and March 28, respectively. The final presentation of the series will take place in April, with speaker to be announced.
