Purdue to honor students involved in auto accident over break

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A memorial service is planned for Tuesday (Jan. 18) at a Purdue residence hall to honor three men who were killed in an automobile accident over the holiday break, and another service on Wednesday (Jan. 12) will remember one of the men's involvement with Purdue student government.

Students Faizan Sewani, 20, and Muhammad Bengali, 21, died from injuries sustained in the Dec. 18 crash, while a third student, Danish Khamisani, 21, remains in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Khamisani's brother, Asad Khamisani, not a Purdue student, also was killed in the accident.

The memorial to honor the men who died is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday (Jan. 18) in Hawkins Residence Hall. The ceremony will include readings by friends and co-workers, and people will be invited to share memories, said residential life manager Jennifer Nordland.

"We will have a moment of silence to show our support for Danish Khamisani who is still in everyone's thoughts," Nordland said.

A counselor from Counseling and Psychological Services will be on hand to talk to people individually after the ceremony.

Purdue Student Government will hold a memorial service on Wednesday (Jan. 12) for Sewani, who was a senator in student government. The service, which is open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. in Civil Engineering Building, Room 1144.

"The memorial service is our way to honor a fellow member of student government," said Aaron Schnur, president of Purdue Student Government. "We will celebrate Faizan's contributions to Purdue and to the lives of everyone who knew him."

Sewani, a student in the College of Science, was an active member of Purdue Student Government for two years, serving as legislative secretary and senator from the College of Science.

Bengali was a student in the School of Agriculture, and Danish Khamisani was a student in management.

The one-car crash took place on Interstate 65 near Indianapolis. Police said Sewani's car went off the highway and struck a tree.
