Harley W. Snyder

He is one of the most successful businessmen and generous individuals in Northwest Indiana.

Born in Fort Wayne and raised in Valparaiso, Snyder has spent his entire adult life trying to make Porter County a better place to live, learn, and work. His business successes include running his own multi-office property and casualty insurance agency, his own realty and development company, his own construction company, and a corporation which focused on developing single-family residential opportunities.

As a community leader, Snyder has served on virtually every important board or committee in Valparaiso and Porter County. He has been a director or former director of 16 different corporations, boards or foundations, including the Valparaiso University Board of Trustees. His good deeds have affected people across the state of Indiana.

A pioneer in fair housing, open access to medical care, and a champion of education for the disadvantaged, Snyder has created the environment for countless underprivileged to have a better life. He continues to improve his community with efforts to bring affordable housing to people. He has served as president of both the Indiana Association of Realtors (1972) and the National Association of Realtors (1983). He has also been involved in numerous fund-raising campaigns including the United Way of Porter County.

Snyder’s association with Purdue North Central began several years ago when he helped in the development of the Valparaiso Academic Center. He was instrumental in the acquisition of property and has plans to donate the facility to PNC in the future. After the acquisition of 37 acres across the street from PNC, Snyder and another local developer have become interested in developing the property for residential and apartment dwellings.

Through his efforts on behalf of PNC, Snyder has elevated the presence and esteem of PNC in Porter County. Based on his personal efforts, many other community leaders have become involved with the campus and have made significant contributions to the campus development.

Snyder has been generous to the campus with his time, vision, and personal resources. As the developer of University Village, he will enrich the campus’ functionality and financial revenues. As the owner of the Valparaiso Academic Center, he has offered significant financial opportunities to the campus, and he continues to look for ways to advance the campus.
