November 3, 2004 Purdue Theatre presents Sam Shepard's 'Buried Child'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue Theatre will perform "Buried Child," Sam Shepards tragic and sometimes wryly humorous examination of the deterioration of the family unit in mid-America beginning Nov. 11 in Stewart Center's Experimental Theatre.
The play earned the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play for its 1996 revival. Richard Sullivan Lee, associate professor of theater, directs the production. "I was awakened to the passion of Shepards work in the 1970s," Lee said. "His irreverence for dramatic form and structure and his break from the absurd to modified realism captured my imagination. Now, almost 30 years later, I am looking at his words through the eyes of a director, and I am even more exited about exploring his characters, his poetry and his unique way of telling a story." In "Buried Child," the return of son/grandson Vince after a six-year absence ignites tensions among family members scarred by the truth of a never-discussed but ever-present family secret. The show opens at 8 p.m., Nov. 11., with additional performances at 8 p.m., Nov. 12-13, and Nov. 17-20, with 2 p.m. matinees on Nov. 14 and 21. General admission is $14 (weeknights) and $16 (weekends). Senior citizen tickets are $10 and $12, and student tickets are $8 and $10.
