Purdue offers used cars, vans for sale

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The general public is invited to purchase used vehicles from Purdue University's Transportation Service.

Transportation Service has scheduled a sealed-bid sale to dispose of more than 25 cars and vans that have been replaced by newer vehicles. The vehicles will be available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12 and from 8-11 a.m. Nov. 13. Vehicles will be parked at the Transportation Maintenance Building, 1175 Harrison St. Buyers may bid on more than one vehicle, but may make only one bid per vehicle. Bids must be submitted no later than Monday, Nov. 15.

Michael L. Funk, director of Transportation Service, said, "As a self-supporting entity, Transportation Service car and van operation receives no money directly from the university's budget. In previous years, the department has sold vehicles at auto auctions or sold them to dealerships, and I hope dealers will continue to be interested in our vehicles. This sale expands the number of potential buyers to include faculty, staff, students and the general public. This method of selling vehicles has been used at other universities in the Big Ten, and we are confident it will positively impact our ability to recover more of our operating cost."

More than 25 1999 to 2003 model year Impala, Taurus, Astro, Windstar and eight-passenger vans will be sold. Mileages range from 55,000 to 65,000 miles, Funk said. While looking at the cars and vans, potential buyers will receive information including year, make, model, mileage and estimated wholesale and retail values.

Successful bidders will be notified beginning Nov. 16. Those with winning bids will be able to test drive vehicles before purchasing them. Every vehicle will be sold as is, without warranties of any kind. Payment will be due to the university within 48 hours of acceptance of the bid.

Bidding instructions and a list of vehicles being sold will be posted on the Transportation Service Web page by Nov. 10.
