Student earns Hispanic engineering award

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Javier Irizarry, a doctoral student in Purdue University's School of Civil Engineering, has received a HENAAC/SHPE Foundation Scholarship from the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Corp.

The scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence, exceptional leadership skills, campus and community involvement, and commitment to the Hispanic community. Irizarry, who is from Ponce, Puerto Rico, and other scholarship recipients will be honored in October during the organization's annual conference in Pasadena, Calif.

Irizarry is specializing in construction engineering and management and is attending Purdue on a George Washington Carver Fellowship.

 

Purdue undergrads receive international scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Four Purdue students have received international scholarships to study abroad during the 2004-05 academic year.

Jared Molitoris, Indianapolis, majoring in mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and premedicine, received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service.

Derek Morris, Waldorf, Md., majoring in English, and Matthew Schmitt, Franklin, Wis., majoring in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, each received a scholarship from the Japan Student Services Organization, formerly known as the Association of International Education, Japan. Both will study in Japan during the 2004-05 academic year. Morris will spend the year at the University of Tsukuba, and Schmitt will study at Osaka University. The scholarship provides a round-trip air ticket, a one-time settling in allowance of approximately $250, and a cash stipend for the academic year of approximately $700 per month.

Patrick Soboleski, South Bend, Ind., majoring in Japanese and mathematics, received a $4,000 Bridging Scholarship for a year's study at the University of Tsukuba. The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission, an independent federal agency promoting mutual understanding between the United States and Japan, initiated the Bridging Project scholarship program in 1999. For the 2004-05 academic year, 79 recipients were chosen from a field of 400 applicants.
