Campaign for Purdue rises to reach nearly 75 percent of its goal

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University officials announced today (Wednesday, Aug. 18) that the Campaign for Purdue raised $229 million in the recent fiscal year, bringing the fund-raising effort's total to $947 million toward its $1.3 billion goal.

Purdue President Martin C. Jischke said the year marked many firsts for the university. Cash gifts generated $128 million, exceeding last year's total by 69 percent, while alumni participation topped a record 20 percent.

"We are extremely pleased that Purdue has maintained a high level of fund-raising success," Jischke said. "And we are so grateful for the continued support of our alumni, friends and corporate donors, who believe in Purdue's ability to have a positive impact in education, as well as on Indiana's economy and quality of life.

"It is truly remarkable when we reflect on the fact that 88,263 separate gifts were received this past year. This is 15 percent more than the university's five-year average of 76,768 gifts. These numbers are a clear reflection of the support and enthusiasm demonstrated by our contributors."

During the fiscal year, which ran from July 1, 2003, to June 30 the university received $36 million in gifts-in-kind and real estate, $15 million in deferred gifts and $90 million in new pledge commitments. Of the $128 million raised in cash, only $88 million is counted in the fiscal year since $40 million of those gifts were made on existing pledges.

Support from Purdue alumni and former students totaled more than $105 million, corporations and foundations gave nearly $90 million, and friends and other organizations combined to give another $34 million.

The top 10 gifts and pledges made during the 2004 fiscal year include:

• A $17.5 million grant from the Lilly Endowment Inc. to fund the establishment of as many as 20 endowed faculty positions through matching gifts. Ten positions will be created at Purdue's West Lafayette campus and an additional 10 positions will be created at three statewide campuses.

• A $9.9 million bequest from Bill and Karen Palmore to be used in areas to be determined by the university.

• A $9 million anonymous gift to the College of Engineering and the School of Education.

• A $7 million gift from Roger Gatewood to the School of Mechanical Engineering.

• $5 million from J. Russell "Rusty" Rueff and his wife, Patricia, to the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, which was renamed the Patti and Rusty Rueff Department of Visual and Performing Arts. The gift was the single largest in the history of the School of Liberal Arts.

• $5 million from Patrick and Lucy Wang for the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering's $128 million campaign.

• A $4 million anonymous gift to the Department of Computer Science building campaign.

• $3.9 million from Heddy Kurz toward construction of the $46 million Millennium Engineering Building and the planned Computer Science Building.

• $3.7 million from Sun Microsystems as a gift-in-kind to recycle personal computers and boost computer performance for undergraduate classes.

• A $3.3 million gift from Jim and Marilynn Dammon to fund the Clarence E. Dammon Dean's Scholars Program in the School of Liberal Arts and H. William Bottomley Scholars Program in the School of Mechanical Engineering.

Campaign fund raising supports the objectives of Purdue's strategic plan, which include efforts to increase funds for student scholarships, faculty recruitment and retention, programs and centers, facilities and equipment, and unrestricted purposes.

The quiet phase of the Campaign for Purdue began in 2000. The campaign was publicly announced in 2001. The effort is both the largest in Purdue history and the largest university campaign in Indiana.
