August 9, 2004 Vandalism affects campus computer service, cable systemWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University police officers are investigating vandalism that affected computer systems and cable television service in several campus buildings over the weekend. Deputy Chief Steven R. Dietrich said intruders entered the utility tunnels, which connect many campus buildings, via a sidewalk grate around 4 a.m. Saturday. While in the tunnels, the intruders cut several large fiber optic cables that feed into campus computer systems, as well as coaxial cable connected to the university's residence hall cable system. The damage interrupted computer service to the police department dispatch system, the Purdue Airport's records system, as well as other campus buildings. It also interrupted cable service to the residence halls. Workers restored service to all buildings within 24 hours. Dietrich said the material cost of the incident was about $500, but some data was also lost on the affected computer systems. "These were not wires you could cut with a pocketknife," Dietrich said. "Someone planned this ahead of time and took bolt cutters down there with them. It was not spur of the moment." Dietrich said the motion alarm in the tunnels was activated at 4:06 a.m. near the Dick and Sandy Dauch Alumni Center. From there, subsequent alarms showed the vandals moved northwest through the tunnels, setting off alarms near Lilly Hall of Life Sciences and Stone Hall, before coming out near Vawter Hall.
