August 6, 2004 Computer server move to interrupt campus servicesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A move of computer servers to Purdue University's expanded data center will prevent some faculty, staff and students from accessing their personal files for three days next week. The servers that provide instructional computing services - including the student computer labs - will be moved from the Mathematical Sciences building to Freehafer Hall of Administrative Services starting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 10), said Bill Urbanczyk, infrastructure security coordinator in the Office of Information Technology. The work is expected to take three days with full service being restored by 5:30 p.m. Friday (Aug. 13). The work will not affect electronic mail services. However, most of the student computer labs will be shut down and career account files will not be available. The campus dial-up and wireless networks will be available. During the move, faculty, staff and students will not be able to use files on these servers: rosetta.ics.purdue.edu, stone.ics.purdue.edu, webpublish.ics.purdue.edu, offcampus.ics.purdue.edu, champion.ics.purdue.edu and lookout.ics.purdue.edu. These servers are frequently referred to as H: drives on Windows workstations. Web pages on these servers will not be available during the move. The change was scheduled between the end of summer classes and start of new student orientation for the fall semester. "This is the least disruptive time because there are no classes and the student population is at its lowest during the year," Urbanczyk said. Instructional computing services operates the public computer labs located throughout campus. The department also provides up to 500 megabytes of storage to students, faculty and staff for personal use, including web pages. Writer: J.
