July 29, 2004 A variety of topics on tap for Purdue Ag Center field daysWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Several Purdue University Agriculture Centers will be the sites of free field days for producers throughout the month of August. "Fields days are an opportunity for crop, livestock, and timber producers and land managers to view new concepts being applied in the varied environments of Indiana," said Steve Hawkins, assistant director of Purdue's Ag Centers. "It's a way for producers to pursue more information on topics presented so that Purdue staff can help them adapt the information to their operations." Common topics at this year's field days include hybrid and herbicide trials, the agricultural outlook, pesticide emergency response and bulk storage options. In many cases, continuing education credits for private applicators, commercial applicators and certified crop advisors are available for a fee. A free lunch also will be provided at several of the locations. Field days include: Aug. 10 - Southwest-Purdue Ag Center, Vincennes, Ind., 2-4 p.m. This field day features discussions about muskmelon and watermelon variety trials, tomato nutrition, disease forecasting for muskmelons, heat stress and sun injury on watermelons, and various pest insect management strategies for vegetable and fruit crops. Aug. 23 - Southeast-Purdue Ag Center, Butlerville, Ind., 5:30-8:30 p.m. Presentations on handling major pesticide spills, winter annual weed management, corn hybrid performance trials, tile drainage impact on water quality and bulk pesticide storage are planned for this field day. Aug. 24 - Davis-Purdue Ag Center, Farmland, Ind., 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Presentations at this field day include pesticide emergency response, bulk containment and storage options, new ventures in Indiana agriculture, corn and soybean herbicide demonstration plots, and shifting weed population research. Continuing education credits are available. Lunch will be provided. Reservations are requested by calling (765) 584-2271 prior to Aug. 20. Aug. 25 - Pinney-Purdue Ag Center, Wanatah, Ind., 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Topics at this field day include soybean aphid, problem weeds, pesticide applicator's update, plant diseases, agricultural outlook, and plant spacing and emergence and how it affects yields. The event also includes exhibits from local businesses and door prizes. Lunch will be provided, and continuing education credits will be available. For more information, call (219) 733-2379. Aug. 25 - Pinney-Purdue Ag Center, Wanatah, Ind., 6-8 p.m. This is a scaled-down version of the morning presentation. Discussions about soybean aphid and plant disease concerns are slated. Aug. 26 - Northeast-Purdue Ag Center, Columbia City, Ind., 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Discussions about herbicide trials, soybean nematode, crop market trends, private application and generic herbicides are featured.
