July 28, 2004 Purdue band members receive Leath and Wilson scholarshipsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than a dozen students who perform with Purdue University Bands have been awarded talent-based scholarships averaging about $1,000 per recipient. Leath Memorial Scholarships were presented to high school seniors from Indiana who chose to attend Purdue instrumental music programs. Other students received Wilson Scholarships, which recognized engineering students who have demonstrated exceptional talent in music. Leath Memorial Scholarships were established in 1988 by the late Wilbur T. Leath, band alumnus of the Class of 1928, to provide musical scholarships for residents of Indiana attending Purdue and participating as an instrumentalist in any of the ensembles within the Department of University Bands. Most recipients are first-year undergraduates. A limited number of scholarships also are awarded to upperclassmen with a minimum GPA of 2.50. All recipients must complete a successful musical audition. Herb and Janice Wilson, of Iowa City, Iowa, established the scholarship that bears their name in order to reward students for leadership and academic success. They award scholarships to a select number of engineering students in band, as well as student office heads and drum majors. Janice Wilson is a nurse by profession and former vice president of Micro-Surface Finishing Products. Herb Wilson earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue in 1951 and an MBA from the University of Chicago in 1959. The Wilsons are longtime supporters of Purdue engineering and the arts.
