Physician-MBA-consultant to speak on health-care engineering

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A physician with an MBA, who brings economic and engineering expertise to contemporary health care, will speak on campus on Thursday (July 29).

Dr. Robert McDonald, a pulmonologist and internist with an MBA from the Wharton School, will give a talk, "Health-Care Engineering," at 3:30 p.m. in the Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Room 121. At 4:30 p.m., a question-and-answer session will follow. The talk is free and open to the public.

Dr. McDonald will discuss the implications of U.S. health care's 14.6 percent share of the nation's gross domestic product in 2002 and its trend of continuing to grow faster than the economy as a whole.

He also will consider the connections – past, present and future – between health care and engineering, the future of health care and the likely impact of engineering disciplines on the field.

Dr. McDonald is president of Aledo Consulting Inc., which provides information technology and medical-device consulting to life sciences companies. He was previously medical director of health-care management for Anthem Inc.

Purdue announced last week that it will establish the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, a multidisciplinary approach to bringing higher efficiency and effectiveness to the delivery of health care. The Regenstrief Foundation in Indianapolis has committed $3 million in startup funds for the center.
