June 29, 2004 Four Purdue students chosen for Air Force technical internshipsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Four Purdue University undergraduates in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics have been chosen to participate in the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps' Summer Technical Recruiting Internship Program. Nick Chachor, Des Plaines, Ill., Megan Darraugh, Lake Bluff, Ill., Adam Naramore, Valparaiso, Ind., and Matthew Smith, Birmingham, Ala., were among the 36 candidates selected from 143 Air Force ROTC detachments nationwide to participate in the paid internship program. The program, which is now in its second year, offers more than $5,000 in cash and benefits and the opportunity for a full ROTC scholarship. "As a recruiting tool, the Air Force offers select students the internship and, at the conclusion, the Air Force decides whether they want to offer each student a scholarship," said Lt. Tim Grebs, unit admission liaison officer for Purdue's Air Force ROTC Department of Aerospace Studies. "We're hoping to get all four on scholarship in the fall. They're in their sophomore year now, moving into their junior year. They would be on a fast track ROTC experience and get commissioned into the Air Force as second lieutenants upon graduation." The four interns, recruited via the summer internship program to join Purdue AFROTC Detachment 220, will work with Air Force and Department of Defense staff members at various Air Force laboratories around the country. Chachor is working at Eglin AFB at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Darraugh is at Edwards AFB in the Mohave Desert near Palmdale, Calif. Naramore and Smith are at Kirtland AFB near Albuquerque, N.M. The interns will work on some of the latest military technology, including the airborne laser program, aircraft munitions and guided missiles, aircraft systems and structures, and stealth technology, Grebs said. Based on their performance during the internship, the student interns may be offered a $15,000 per year Air Force ROTC scholarship to actively participate in the ROTC program while completing their college degrees.
